Dr Mario Boley

Mario Boley is a lecturer in the Department of Data Science and AI at the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University. He is an expert in interpretable machine learning aiming to develop data analysis methods that empower humans. His vision is statistical models that are as accurate as opaque artificial neural networks but at the same time fully comprehensible by human domain experts. He believes that such models would facilitate scientific discoveries that are needed to deal with critical challenges in sustainable development. Thus, his research does not only cover fundamental contributions to algorithmic data analysis and discrete optimisation but also applied work in materials science, e.g., on the discovery of novel photovoltaic materials. He obtained his PhD in 2011 in Bonn, Germany, for work in algorithmic order theory. Mario is supervising Andre Nunez on the SE Water project along with OPTIMA CI Guido Tack.
