A Multi-Fidelity Benders Decomposition Approach to Generation, Storage and Transmission Expansion Planning.

Bio:
Drew Mitchell is a PhD candidate at Monash University supervised by Andreas Ernst, Pierre Le Bodic and Simon Dunstall (CSIRO). He completed his undergraduate degree in 2018, at Monash University in Applied Mathematics and Physics, with honours in Applied Mathematics. Drew spent two years working for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia before returning to Monash to begin his PhD studies in 2021. Drew’s research has focussed on the optimisation of energy grid expansion planning problems, specifically decomposition techniques and accelerations. He is expected to submit his thesis in October this year.
Abstract:
To optimise modern energy grid expansion planning, which by necessity includes time series data for storage and renewable assets, techniques for decomposition are a requirement. I will discuss a novel method, capable of contending with a planning horizon in its entirety, based on a Benders decomposition approach. To improve the speed of generating Benders cuts, the full subproblem is partitioned into smaller independent subproblems covering the entire horizon. We apply this approach to a variety of modified IEEE test cases and several scenarios of the real-world Australian National Energy Market (NEM) to show that dynamically adjusting the subproblems’ size between multiple fidelities can provide significant speed-up.
