OPTIMA Debate 2025
We Shouldn’t Optimise Everything – Imperfection is Humanity’s Best Feature!
We’re back to put the spotlight on optimisation — this time with a big dose of humour and spirited discourse from our optimisation community! Proudly hosted in conjunction with Melbourne Connect Innovation Week 2025, and moderated by comedian, mathematician, and science communicator Simon Pampena.
In the spirit of MCIW2025’s theme, “Redefining the Future”, join us for the annual OPTIMA Debate, where leading optimisation researchers from fields such as mathematics, computer science, engineering, and economics explore whether hyper-efficiency is always the best solution.
From “overfitting life” to the ethics of optimisation, and whether chaos and spontaneity still have a place in an increasingly optimised world, our panellists will challenge assumptions and spark new perspectives. After all, if life were 100% efficient, would we lose those unpredictable yet defining moments — like a spontaneous 2AM snack run?
Panellists will debate topics like overfitting life, the ethics of optimisation, and whether chaos and spontaneity still have a place in an increasingly optimised world.
Whether you’re a professional, a curious creative or just an optimisation enthusiast, join us on our debate to find out which team will emerge victorious and enjoy the chance to network over light lunch.
