AI-based Optimisation 14 September 2022 15:00

Speaker: Joe Naoum-Sawaya, Associate Professor of Management Science at the Ivey Business School.

Title: Optimization Models for Learning Consumer Preferences

Many machine learning models such as regression, classification, clustering, and deep learning can be naturally posed as optimization problems. In fact, the widespread adoption of machine learning is in part attributed to the development of efficient numerical optimization methods. In this talk, we focus on models for consumer preference learning which plays a critical role in numerous marketing and operational decisions. A commonly used data-driven approach for consumer preference learning is based on eliciting consumer choice preferences and fitting a function that ultimately provides a utility score for each consumer choice. The typical framework is based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) which can be formulated as a convex optimization problem. While SVM has been studied extensively, consumer preference learning has several peculiarities that relate to segmentation, consumer privacy, and consumer choice irrationality. For that, we present new optimization models that capture the specificity of consumer preference learning and discuss the results that show higher model accuracy as well as more detailed segmentation of consumers. More importantly, these models do not require additional data collection, thus maintaining consumer privacy.
