Dr Marcella Papini is a Lecturer in Data Science and Optimisation at the University of Newcastle. Her research combines mathematical optimisation, operations research and data science to support decision-making for sustainable and resilient systems. She develops mathematical programming, network optimisation, simulation and metaheuristic approaches for applications in transport, logistics, energy and infrastructure. Her current research includes climate-resilient port and freight networks, vehicle-to-grid systems, reverse logistics and sustainable resource recovery. Marcella works closely with academic and industry partners in Australia, Brazil and Europe to translate optimisation methods into practical decision-support solutions. She is also actively involved in interdisciplinary research, international collaboration and the supervision and development of higher degree research students in applied optimisation.
