OPTIMA Seminar 26 July 2023 16:00 (AEST)

Title: Socially Responsible AI: Issues and Opportunities for the disadvantaged communities

Speaker: Prof. Saman Halgamuge

Summary:
Saman will discuss the 21st century AI need to be socially responsible and equipped with capabilities to face serious threats like dangerous epidemics and climate emergencies. Several major technical issues hinder the creation of such AI with democratized access and the ability to regulate that would bring most of this technology to almost all people on Earth. AI used in applications evade regulations in most parts of the world. Saman will introduce two of these major technical issues of AI as well as the opportunities current AI can create for the disadvantaged communities. Saman’s talk will also focus on applications of value to the planet including the developing world, e.g., Health, Agriculture, Energy, Transportation and Environment.
